Bachelor of Design in Creative Media
INSTRUCTIONS
27 September 2022 - 11 October 2022 (Week 5-Week7)
LECTURE NOTE
Self portrait is a self representation in a form of drawing/painting/sculpture/design/ It is a visual depiction of the
self represents the designer/artist/. In other words how he sees himself, what
he's feeling, and how he wants to be seen by others. its not necessarily
about creating a realistic image of yourself, instead, its often an exercise
in self exploration.
SELF PORTRAIT VISUAL REFERENCE
After listening to the pre-recorded lectures, I then found some other
reference/examples of simple self portrait. Turns out that self portrait has
so much different variation of style, some of them are cartoon-ish which is
so adorable, some of them has a dark visual vibes, some is cool and
minimalistic.

IDEA EXPLORATION
Before making some sketches, we were told to make mind-map of ourselves, list every personality traits of us and how we/others describe us physically. This way helps the idea for self portrait to be easier.
Figure. 0 (Mindmap)
1) Sketches
At first, I was wondering on what style should I use for my self portrait, is it going to be abstract painting style, dark , peaceful and joy, or do portray myself as an animal. So For this first sketch, I got the inspiration from the picture below, it is an beautiful artwork by Tahlia Stanton, so basically how I try to portray myself in this sketch is from my experience, how I think of myself and what others think of me.. and it comes with some sketches that I've made.

FIRST SKETCH
For the first sketch, I was inspired by this painting bellow..
Figure. 0 (First idea)
The panda head that I drew is based on how my friends see me, while both
sandglass and wings are based on my experience which sandglass represents
how I feel enduring my neck tension, and wings represents that I'm flying
far from home. For this sketch I'm still on the process in figuring out
where should I go with this drawing..
SECOND SKETCH
Figure.0 (Second Sketch)
Now for this second sketch, it is much complex by terms of elements and
also applying design principles. The idea here is to differentiate how
others see me (right side) with how I see myself (Left side). Left side will
have a black and white/dark background but the panda will be colorful, while
on the right side a colorful background with a normal black and white
panda.
This sketch was inspired by these artworks bellow:

Figure.0 (Background reference for the right side Pinterest)
Figure.0 (Dark bamboo forest for the left side from Pinterest)

THIRD & FOURTH SKETCH
Figure.0 (Third and Fourth sketch, similar style)
Basically, this is just the digital and colored version of the first
sketch that I've made. I almost went with this style for the final
submission, but most of the feedback I received from others said that it's
too messy.. so I changed it
FIFTH SKETCH
SIXTH SKETCH
Figure.0 (Fifth idea)
This is
the fifth sketch, I thought this piece is going to be the end game, but
turns out I'm wrong, at first this should be a women's face with evaporating
flowers above her head, and the surroundings is supposed to be wild flowers.
Although now I know that it turned out different from what I had in mind
mainly because I have no reference of what I'm trying to draw/paint.
DESIGN PROCESS
Figure.0 (My mindmap)
After I failed to paint (as shown in the previous picture), I then decided to continue the fifth sketch I've made last week.
Firstly I sketch out my face
and then drew some wings, the wings is a symbol of freedom and also creative
energy.. as in my experience, wings here mainly shows that I flew far away
from home to embrace new phase of life. Evaporating hair and draining black
eyes (idk how to describe the words haha) is how I see myself, basically
evaporating shows that I still overthink a lot though I'm trying my best not
too. Draining black eye, shows that I constantly felt sadness and anger but
still my facial expression is happy no matter what. There's also flower on my
head, those flower symbolized loveliness.
Figure. 0 (Blue color from Google)
Why I chose the color blue for my wings.. well, this part is based on how
others see me. From what I asked my friends about me, I am trustworthy,
loyal, responsible, caring and reliable.. so then I searched on google what
color represents most of that descriptions.. It's blue!
FINAL RESULT
Figure.0 (Final Result)
After that sketch, I continue more on the background.. the background
represents that I have a good energy around people, there's also 3
butterflies. The butterflies here symbolizes transformation and hope. In
conclusion, the self portrait I've made contains 2 types of design principle
(Symmetrical Balance and symbol) Symmetrical Balance can be seen from the
symmetrical wings while symbol can be seen as butterflies.
FEEDBACKS
Week 5: The mind-map was great, very detailed and makes it easier for me
to sketch later on, just need to choose what will be used for my self
portrait.
Week 6: Centralize the first idea , the hourglass change it into
tightrope that are tangled. make the wings bigger.
Week 7: Continue on the idea, but make sure that the final result is good
and contains the design principle that we've learnt.
REFLECTION
After doing the self portrait project, I personally felt unsatisfied with how it turned out, being unwell right now doesn't even felt like the best excuse for me, since I have quite plenty of time to do this last week, instead I chose to make a small progress every week and when the deadline is near, only then I started to panic and feel frustrated. Guess this is another lesson for me not to postpone tasks and procrastinate. On the other hand, I feel that I need to practice more on both my digital art and manual painting/drawing, do more research or even watch more art contents from social media or even my surroundings. While doing this self portrait, at first I was thrilled to paint, but when executing the painting, I failed many times and that leaves me feeling hopeless, not wanting to continue the project due to the fear of failure. Another thing that I learnt is that art requires artists to take risks, accepting failure in order to improve. Overall, by doing this self portrait I'm able to express myself in my current situation through the artwork. Although it isn't as good as I thought it'll be.. I'm still proud of myself for being able to finish this.
