Week 6- Week 7 Jennifer Huang / 352990 Bachelor of
Design in Creative Media Typography (Text Formatting)
LECTURE NOTES
Week 6 On week 6, Mr. Vinod checks our previous exercise's blog
while we were told to look at others work and gave them feedbacks. Before
this week, on week 5, Mr. Vinod had already brief us about what we'll do on
project 1 which is Text Formatting. In order to do so, we'll just need to
choose one of the editorial text that have been provided on Facebook, fix it
up a little (Kerning, Leading, Letterspacing) like we've done on the
previous exercise. After that, we were told to do some sketch for the text
formatting we'll make.

Week 6 - Wrong Headline, Supposed to be 'Visualize for a Better World'
not 'Creativity Takes Courage.' Although the feedback towards the first
draft I made overall was good. And here are some feedback given by my
college.
a) Glen Owen : the headline is interesting, but the layout
text is hard to be readable
b) Lau Zhen Lin : If this layout is to be read vertically,
then the heading should also be that way. Try to not leave a big gap in
between paragraphs.
c) Hasnol Rafiq : Very creative heading but the sideways text is
confusing
d) Jacquline Lim : I think u can try other typefaces for
your title so it's more clear and easier to read too
e) Arnusha Arnaz Khan : The heading is quite creative and
the lines extending to the edges of the page is a nice touch. It's a
little hard to read the heading sideways, and the 'takes' and 'courage'
should be flipped. Make sure the main body text is roman (normal) and
not oblique (italics).
f) Jason Ong : sideways text is too hard to read
g) Gladys Wong : The headline's interesting but a little hard
to read as it doesn't flow well with the body of text.
h) Gabriela Nathalie : Maybe you can try to adjust the
headline. It's good and creative but when I saw your design, the first
thing that caught my intention was the word 'creative takes courage', not
the headline.
I) Yumi Chew : The headline is interesting and so creative.
But, a little difficult to read it. And maybe the last line of the body
text is a bit weird for me, which for me, which is a big gap from the
previous paragraph.
J) Singyee Tan : The word of 'creative' was interesting, and
the layout is bit confuse and hard to read for me.
k) Viola Allegra : The heading looks so interesting! but
making the text sideways makes it harder to read and breaks the harmony
between the headline and the text.
l) Mina Kim : Headline is neat and so creative! I personally
found that the paragraphs are a bit hard to read. The font style for the
lead-in text could change.
m) Jaycee Tan : The headline and layout looks creative! but
it's a bit complicated & confusing to read, other than that I think
the layout overall looks fine.
Week 7 - No class
REFLECTION
Experience - I learnt a lot of new things in Adobe In-Design,
fun fact I don't even know In-Design exist.. I always thought that
designers edit all their artwork on Photoshop or Illustration.
Observation - After finishing this task, I found out that I
lack of consistency, I constantly change ideas (which can be good &
bad thing). I was also careless at the beginning because I wrote the wrong
headline on the first draft, but then after feedbacks from others and Mr.
Vinod I finally realize and changed the whole thing and made few more
sketches to consider.
Findings - I recently found out that Adobe In-Design is used
by designers to design food packaging / books / flyer and so much more,
turns out that they've been using In-Design all along. It was actually a
fun thing to do once you've mastered the functions of the
software.
FURTHER READING
This isn't exactly further reading, but it's definitely knowledge
gain material. From this video I learnt so much ways to gain
creativity. Basically thinking out of the box isn't easy but it
needs tolerant, and as a timeless thinker we always loose hope
when comes barriers on how to make the idea in a reality. Go
beyond converge information. Think absurd. Value long thinking.
Relate and combine ideas. look for alternatives, not just one
right answer. Surround yourself with people who are not critical
of you practicing creativity. To come up with good ideas, Start
with convergent information and play with each element, make it
absurd. Don't stop yourself from continuing.
