INSTRUCTIONS

Timeframe       :        Week 08-Week 12
Deadline          :        Week 13
Description     :
With the knowledge and experience gained in the exercises and tasks, with the accumulated knowledge from the lectures and your own reading (library books and online sources), with the experience gained in the different software covered in the
programe thus far, synthesize and apply the learning in the tasks to be mentioned. Allow the knowledge gained to guide and inform your decisions for the effective execution of your final
task. Create a font that is intended to solve a larger problem or meant to be part of a solution in the area of your interest be it graphic design, animation, new media or entertainment design or any other related area not necessarily reflecting your specialization. End result: a complete generated font (.ttf) with applications. or Explore the use of an existing letterform in an area of interest, understand its existing relationship, identify areas that could be improved upon, explore possible solutions or combinations that may add value to the existing letterform / lettering. End result: a complete generated font (.ttf) with applications. or Experiment. For your idea to qualify as an experiment it must be novel and unique — working with material that might be 3-dimensional, digitally augmented, edible, unusual, typographic music video or fine art. End result: defined by student. To be effective you will need to study your selected area, look at how type is used in the area and identify potential weaknesses or possible areas of further exploration or experimentation. You can then attempt to provide a creative solution or add value to an existing use. The end outcome could be a designed font and its application in the form or format that it is intending to provide a solution to, or a designed font that adds value to an existing use, or an experimentative output that results in something novel and unique. The work can manifest into any kind of format related to the issue being solved or explored or experimented: animation, 3d, print, ambient, projection, movie title or game title, music video, use of different material etc.

Learning Goals :
1. To create purposeful typefaces that are consistent in design and identify and with appropriacy in mind.
2. To simulate use of typeface in application while ensuring consistency in design.

PROPOSAL

SKETCH AND EXPLORATION

First Idea

Fig.1 First Idea sketch Attempt Week 9 (1/06/23)

As shown on the proposal ppt, I firstly wanted to go with coffee bean, and that's how it turned out, but Since last semester I did a bubbly font, This semester I would like to try something new.

Second Idea

Fig. 2 Week 9 (06/06/23)
So the second idea was based on Swiss721 Cn BT. The idea was to make a thinner stroke font and I wanted to make it subtle but also captivating to the eye.

Fig. 3 Week 9 (06/06/23)
Starting by making some sketches on paper with ballpoint.

Fig. 4 Week 9 (06/06/23)
Moving on to Adobe Illustrator by tracing each shape/letter with pen tool

Upper Case construction process

Fig. 5 Upper Case Letter Constructions Week 11 (13/06/23)
After I'm done tracing it out, I then start to refine the letters to a better looking font. I used small box shape as its measurement for each letter so they can be consistent. Through all the uppercase letter, I struggle most on making letter 'S' but thankfully I figured it out and it turned out okay.

This is the final outcome for the uppercase. Overall I think it's okay..

Lower Case construction process

TYPEFACE PRESENTATION

TYPEFACE APPLICATION
JeNT Typeface mainly aims for vintage/old style texts that can be found on letters/postcards/invitations. So I wanted to implement my fonts to different types of postcards and some for storybook designs.

Fig. 16 First Attempt Application*2 Week 14 (05/07/23)

Fig. 17 Second Attempt Application*2 Week 14 (05/07/23)
Turns out that some words/paragraph on the first design is not legible, I decided to crop 1/3 of the image, leaving some white space I can use to put the texts.

This is the Second attempt of 'Type Vintage Why Not'. I'm just testing out different layouts for the texts so it'll be less boring.

FEEDBACK

Week 9 - The idea overall its okay, first sketch is consistent although some of the letter has unnecessary elements.
Week 10 - You must make your own font! Of course there might be similar fonts out there but it must've had some difference.
Week 11 - Some letters aren't consistent and there are not legible.
Week 12 - Since I ended up restart my whole font, Its going to be such a rush..

REFLECTION

Experience - Through type discovery and use, I set out on a quite transformative journey. In search of the ideal visual language for each project, I plunge headfirst into various of fonts. continued by experimentation of different sketches.

Observation - The subtleties and complexities of fonts are carefully observed through type investigation and application. I'm able to recognize the minute differences in letterforms, stroke weights, and kerning. I became observant at how hierarchy, readability, and negative space interact with type. These insights guide my final design choices, resulting in aesthetically pleasing and powerful visual compositions.

Findings - I find that although I quite like how it turned out, but I lack consistency in some letter forms which makes the overall typeface messy if zoomed out. Definitely requires more improvement in the future.
