LECTURE NOTES

Visualization is important for designers, and this is where observation comes in. Being observant means to be attentive to your surroundings, to pay attention to the details and to the analytical about them. Especially for designer, it is crucial to do observation because it is an effective way to get ideas such as from social media platforms, artifacts, daily happenings, physical surroundings.
8 ways to improve your powers of observation:

1. know your subject, you'll notice more if you understand
2. slow down and look outward, use mindfulness to focus your attention on your surroundings.
3. Try something new, choose an activity that will engage your senses and heighten your awareness
4. improve your concentration by cutting out distractions., turn off your phone, log out of social media or go somewhere quite where you wont be disturbed.
5. challenge yourself to a mental workout, a smarter, more agile brain will help you to observe with greater insight..
6.  test your observation by playing a memory game, describe a photograph, or list everything in the room you're in right now without looking. and remember, practice makes perfect.
7. record and consider your observations, go beyond the things you see. note down the smells and sounds you experience.
8. stay inquisitive, question and analyze your observations, doing this will and value your work.

Observing is an active act of acquiring information, through the senses, of a subject matter in its natural setting. Senses is important for us to know, feel, understand, analyse, and even plan what we want to do. Observation is important for designers as it enables them to see "problems", as well as getting ideas for solutions to those problems.

SENSE OF PLACE
- Think about the place you're in now, or a place you had spent some time at previously, or, a place that had created a lasting memory in you.
- How do you express your sense of that place?
- Start by documenting your observations - photographs, diary, talking to relevant people, etc.

INSTRUCTION

Project 2 : Sense of Place

Deadline : Week 10

Descriptions : Through this project, we are required to utilize and apply the design principles that we've learnt to date in order to express a location of their choice. The place becomes the subject of the composition in which the design principles are applied to capture the social and environmental aspects, and even the time effects that will best express their intention/interpretation for a particular location. This requires us to move beyond the classroom to the outer world and to employ our skills in capturing and communicating a complex relationship.

Learning Goals :

1. To apply design principles covered during the semester to the work
2. To create an awareness of how materials and compositions are critical to our communication.

PICTURE I CHOSE

Figure.1 (First picture)
So, I took this picture early this year, when me and my family visits bangka in Indonesia. We went to the beach everyday to swim, play with the sand, relax, and enjoy the beauty of sea-view. This place is very memorable to me mainly because of the evening breeze, and the environment around, also it was very calming and beautiful because I was there with the people I love while watching the sunsets (the sunset picture is gone because I changed my phone, otherwise I'll be using that picture instead).

Figure.2 (Second picture)
This is the second picture for the second idea that I had in mind, This was taken during a trip with my friends at trans studio Bandung, Indonesia. I took this picture because this place holds not just the memories of me and my friends while we were there, but also the nostalgia of my childhood during primary, and it just feels nice and warm.

IDEA EXPLORATION

First Draft :
Figure. 11 ( FIrst idea)

Figure. 12 (sky color sketch)
For the first draft, I was going to paint this beach view, but turns out we can't replicate the picture we've chosen.. so I changed into the second draft.

Second Draft :

Figure. 13 (Second Draft Pic)

Figure. 14 (Second Draft Sketch)
For this second idea, Basically this is how I picture it, wavy background and glitches shows how nostalgic this place is.

Figure. 15 (Third and final draft)
So this is the first draft of design I made after the feedback given by Ms. Yip Jinchi the week before, after she stated that the building isn't necessary for this type of design so I removed the building, instead I illustrate pretty much how I felt in that place. It was warm and majestic place since inside the building was a theater also a indoor theme park, therefor the I decided to illustrate it with 3 main color which is blue, yellow, purple.  The swirls of sparkles there represents the memories that we've made on that place. There are 5 friends sitting on the ground which represents me and my friends, we're enjoying the moment.

FEEDBACK
Week 8 - Self learning Week

Week 9 -  Second sketch Ms. Yip Jinchi said that I was to stuck with the picture of the building, although I got the potential on the second draft, I just need to play with the color scheme, the wavy atmosphere behind is also very interesting, the first draft was interesting too, I can add more details to it, but she said for a sketch she thinks that its too big, next time I should consider making smaller size for a sketch.

Week 10 - Nice work, just need more sparkles on the ground and glowing effect on the persons since its bright in front, and behind them the shadows should be darker.

REFELECTION

At first I was confused what kind of place that has some kind of sense that I can visualize through an artwork. But then finally I found a place that contains many unforgettable moments also precious memories. The process itself hasn't been easy for me, as you can see at first I was too stuck with visualizing the building into the design which makes my ideas limited. Thanks to Ms.Yip Jinchi's feedback I was then able to come up with another idea. Unlike the previous project and exercises, I am proud of how it turned out, and I feel like the time management this time is getting better.  What I learn from this project is that we need to trust the process and trust your instincts because the more unexpected things go, the more ideas you'll discover and eventually without you realizing you got more potential than you realize. Most importantly have the courage to take risks and make mistakes.

Give yourself permission to be creative - TED TALK
Most of the people think that creativity are limited through artist, dancer, singer, when the truth is everyone of us is creative in their own way. For example when we face problems, we often think of many possible situations to handle it, to face it and to overcome it. Going through those three at least 10.000 thoughts come across our mind. Those thoughts without us noticing, counts as someone who has a creative mind. On the last part, Ethan hawke mentioned something about 'playing the fool'. Which means trying new things, stepping out of your comfort zone is the best way to live. Well it is horrifying because you won't know what will come next, but that's the hard truth if you are willing to change/grow. In life, the journey itself is art. Express yourself, know yourself, do what you love.
