LECTURE RECAP
Visual analysis is a method of understanding art that focuses on
an artwork's visual elements, such as color, line, texture, and scale.
During visual analysis, there should be three main things included
:
Observation - Closely looking at and Identifying the visual
elements of a design and trying to describe them carefully and accurately
in your own words. Do not read beforehand about the design at all. (what
are the colors. Basically about the elements that are in the design, not
the meaning of the design) in this phase, observation means we simply
observe and not make assumption. The observation phase is all about
looking, thinking, and finding good language to communicate what you
notice.
Analysis - Analysis requires you to think about your observations
and try to make statements about the work based on the evidence of your
observations. Think about how the specific visual elements identified
combined to create a whole and what effect that whole has on the viewer.
How your eye is led through the work and why? Apply the Design Principles
knowledge you have learnt throughout these weeks.
Interpretation - Explanation the meaning of an artwork (what does
the painter trying to tell)
INSTRUCTION
Final Project : Visual Analysis
Visual Analysis : Students are to utilize their understanding of design principles found in the design work. This project requires the students to assess, investigate, document and analyze a design material (billboards/television commercial/movie clip/work of design) of their choice. They should notice, size, placement, purpose, effectiveness, as well as aspects of design principles found in the work.

Leaning Goals :
1. To apply design principles covered during the semester to your work.
2. To create an awareness of how materials and composition are critical to your communication.
3, To practice and apply the design principles and be able to analyze them in the work of others.

Rationale
Kennington, Thomas. Orphans. 1885. Oil on canvas. I chose this artwork
because first of all poverty has always been and will most likely always
be a major global issue, it's also one of the example of an in-equality
that homeless and poor people receive from the society.
Phase 1 - Observation
On the first glimpse, observant could clearly see that this was an artwork
range from the Victorian Era. First of all the texture of the artwork is
very smooth, grainy and realistic. It also has a consequent attention to
details which can be seen based on the realism figure of human faces,
bodies, clothes which are no more than rags and the elements in their
surrounding. The colors used in the painting is warm Brownish Yellow which
is the dominant color in the background. On the painting, the main subject
is two young boys sitting on the ground wearing a simple clothing and a
plate in front of them.
Phase 2 - Analysis
When I first look into 'Orphans' painting by Thomas Benjamin Kennington,
the first thing that comes on my mind is how this painting
illustrates harmony in terms of color range, the color
combinations used in this painting is a mix of cool (blue, purple, green)
and warm colors (Yellow, orange, red). The overall painting applies the rule of thirds and also Balance, for example the placement of plate, the two boys, and the shelf on the
upper right corner. The proportion of the visual and weight of elements in
the painting composition is also there, we can see how the elements relate
to each other such as empty plate with few crumbs of bread with an empty
bookshelf and also well-sized main character. Zooming in, it shows
that the depth
of this design is well achieved by creating a sense of spacing between the
background, midground and foreground. Movement in this work of art is
guiding to focus our attention first to the boy sitting, then moving down
to the boy lying who's lying on the other's lap , it then directs us based
on the eye direction where the boy looks to an empty plate filled with a
tiny bit of bread.
Phase 3 - Interpretation
The 'Orphans' is painted in the Victorian Era of London, where there were
a growing number of homeless children. Like many artist, Kenningtion used
his art to promote change in society. Thomas Benjamin Kenningtion mainly
explores the concept of both belonging and not belonging in the painting
'orphans'. The painting of the two boys was created to show how
heartbreaking the situation in London really was, the background
yellowish color implies that the characters are homeless as well as to create a
mood of nostalgia. Based on the painting, they could be brothers. Their clothes are dirty and
untidy, the older boy's head is slumped to the side due to his tiredness.
He can hardly keep his eyes open but he stare down at the head of the
younger boy who through circumstances beyond his control, is whom he has
to look after. The younger boy, with his rosy red cheeks, sits on the
floor and leans againsts the older boy for comfort, his head and arm rest
on the older boy's thigh. He stares out at us in a beseeching way. It is
as if he's asking is it merely sustenance? or does he want our love and
our protection from the deprivation he is forced to suffer. On the floor
before the two boys is a plate with a piece of dried bread highlighting
their plight, this also symbolizes poverty and homeless. However, if we look closely to what this painting is trying to say
besides than heartbreaking feeling is that even though it's painted that
they are homeless and don't belong to home, they're still able to feel
safe and included as they belong to each other, can be seen by their body
language (one is hugging and the other is leaning).
The function of this painting was to cause change in the way people felt
about the homeless in the late 1800's. Even until this day, it seems to be
all the rage to cast out the homeless as people who are there because of
their own mistakes-most notably seen through how poorly pedestrians and
our peers treat homeless in our society. Many people view homeless as a
menance to the society. The problem with this isn't just the bold presence
of classism, but the fact that human society hasn't civilized past the
point where it needs an "other" to cast out. Instead of shaming those on
the streets, we should raise our awareness of the homeless people around
us, and try to understand more why people are homeless. It's time we show
them compassion, not because we feel sorry for them, but because we ought
to give them the dignity of being recognized and being treated equally
especially for children.

IDEA EXPLORATION
In the 'orphans' artwork, it's shown 2 boys who's hoping to receive
love and protection . So, in the design I'm illustrating homeless children getting the
proper education, love, and freedom instead of being ignored and judged
by people.
Figure. 2 first sketch draft
The first sketch, the goal was to make an illustration about feeling of
freedom that homeless child should've receive, The proper education for
them to learn and also getting love, attention, and affection from
others.
Figure. 3 Second Sketch draft
Second sketch, I was connecting it with the Painting reference I pick
above. Its' the two boys finally getting out of their emptiness and step
into a new world where they are given the opportunity to educate
themselves.
The other sketches , I try to illustrate more of the act that we can
offer to homeless child through education.
Figure. 5 Developing idea from 'Figure 2'
for the developing sketch, this one I made it look like there's a portal from the homeless child's place and he walk out of it to the new world that provides freedom, happiness and education for them to have a better future.
for the developing sketch, this one I made it look like there's a portal from the homeless child's place and he walk out of it to the new world that provides freedom, happiness and education for them to have a better future.
Second one, basically is the two children seeking out for help and that
person helps them to find knowledge based on their surrounding.. that's
why I illustrated the books inside the tree since I would like to make
the tree as something that resembles school and education.

DESIGN PROCESS
FINAL OUTCOME
Figure. 8 Final result
So here are my final result about homeless inequality, basically it's an illustration of 2 homeless child finally stepping out of their homeless zone to a perfect world where children have fun and gets the proper education that they should've receive. The cave that depicts where homeless child previously stayed is illustrated by having those massive spider webs which shows how unsanitary that place is. whereas the human figures I intentionally pictured it as colors only to emphasize the homeless child (grey) with the other children who have a colorful self which means that they experience more joy, freedom, and knowledge. In this design, I also applied symmetrical balance which can be seen from the both cliffs, and if you look closely that the cliffs, grass and water each has different kind of textures.
FEEDBACK
Week 11 - Great understanding of which part should be described
in the observation, analysis, and interpretation. On the observation, I
did a wrong research regarding the era of the painting, also turns out
that the information about the era of the painting should be place on
the interpretation section, not the observation. The sentence 'first and
second boy' on the last sentence of the analysis should be changed
because not everyone view it the same way as I did.
Week 12 - Good thing that i did many sketches, the sketch is overall
great but need to add more elements or thing that describes
homelessness.
Week 13 - I need to add more elements and sketches that represents the homeless children
Week 14 - Nice render, although still need to add more details regarding the background (lily pads, plants, etc) and widen the cave where the two children came out from to indicate more of their homeless situation and when they finally come out to the perfect world.
REFLECTION
This Final project is rather challenging for me because lot of analysis are needed and definitely more researches about the inequality that I chose, however I'm glad that I'm able to complete it. One thing that I'm proud of throughout this process is the idea exploration that I did, I found myself searching for many different angles and perspectives to show the perfect world for the homeless children.
