Final Project - Stop Motion

Working Title : Rejected

Synopsis (One Paragraph Only) :
In a village, A was rejected by his fellow classmate because he's different. Until one day he met someone similar to him. On the other hand, the same goes with B who's struggling to fit in because she's different from her classmates. Till she met A. They then become best friends.

Before moving on to my journey on figuring out my stop motion, I would like to give u heads up since it's a rather stressful change of concept and idea. Thankyou :)

#1 First Idea

reason no. 1 - Unstable setting
For the First idea, I was going to go with lego as my main character and using a shoe box as it's room setting. But then I realize it will be hard to move the lego character without lego tiles. My mistake was that I didn't think that through form the beginning...

Fig. 1 Failed Lego attempt

Regardless, I did try to shoot and see how it turned out.. as suspected, its horrible.

reason no. 2 - Failed Prop decorating
I also made the props from Styrofoam (fridge, sofa, bed, table), after carving it with cutter, I was supposed to cover it up with either paint or tape or even paper. So then I tried to use paint, but it turned out mushy and not presentable.. that adds another reason why this is idea won't work..

Fig. 3 Failed Props.

Anyhow, I recorded a time-lapse of me doing a diy Styrofoam bed, sofa, etc. Although I won't be using this idea for my stop motion, it's worth the try.. not to mention, I had fun making it.

Lesson to learn
Always do many research and look up to references.

#2 Second Idea

Mood boards:
Learnt my lesson since the first failure, I started doing more research on stop motion and decided to go with paper based stop motion. Here are some references I intended to make while doing the second idea.

The idea was to make the background and scenery pop out and layered.

Fig. 7 Third Reference

reason no. 1 - not making clear story board!
This is my attempt on making the background. Well up to this point I did not have any problem yet. But then I'm stuck because I still havn't figure out the character yet. Although, I did come up with paper puppet making but it did not turn out to be stable enough for it to stand by its own.

Fig. 8 background layers.

reason no. 2 - Paper puppet not working :(
This is my attempt on making leg puppet. At that time, I use double tape, which might be the reason why it doesn't stick too long, now I know I should've used glue instead.

reason no. 3 - Bad shooting set up
Third and final reason why this idea isn't the one because I too was struggling on finding the perfect spot to shoot the shot, since I don't have any tripod that can hold my phone from above angle.

During the research on stop motion and after viewing some videos on youtube and pinterest, I'm intrigued with the title stop motion. So I made one just to test it out.

Lesson to learn
Although I've written the story board and did some research, It's better not to have other mixed up idea when about to shoot, because then it will be too overwhelming.

#3 Final Idea

Finally, Here are the some reference I took for my final stop motion Project, since it's based on paper, I wouldn't want it to be too complicated so I picked something subtle. As for the theme, I wanted to go with something more vintage, cute, and simple but still eye-catching.

Preparations

Firstly I assembled some stickers (beverages), reliable desk lamp for lighting,  and a sturdy tripod. Since I'll be doing this on my own, I figured I needed a smaller stage for my stop motion considering that it'll be quite challenging if I did bigger stage. The tripod I used did not support upper angle shoot, so I made the background setting vertical.

Shooting Process

Rather than using stop motion application, I decided to go manual with Phone Camera. I also managed to screengrab some parts of my process while arranging the objects.

Final Stop Motion Video

Working Title : Rejected

Synopsis (One Paragraph Only) :
In a village, A was rejected by his fellow classmate because he's different. Until one day he met someone similar to him. On the other hand, the same goes with B who's struggling to fit in because she's different from her classmates. Till she met A. They then become best friends.

This is my final Stop motion Video, after finish shooting, I move to adobe premiere to edit audio and sound effects but sadly I forgot to screenshot it. Nevertheless I'm satisfied with how it turned out.

Conclusion
Well, overall I did learn a lot and had some fun doing stop motion. And for sure, I need to be more disciplined especially on my procrastination during the early weeks. Also, the importance of research and doing mood boards. But regardless, I did have fun doing this Final project.
