Assignment Brief

During Digital Matte Painting, we will undergo a series of exercises that will enhance our understanding of matte as listed below:
1. Perspective Studies (Landscapes and Interiors)
2. Compositions
3. Value Studies
4. Sky replacements
5. Virtual Plain Air
6. 2.5D mattes
7. Invisible Set Extensions.

EXERCISES

WEEK 2
On the first week of class, mr kannan lectures us about the basic understanding of digital matte painting and what we're doing for this module. He mentioned that perspective is crucial for this, and he also guided us to practice our perspective points as well as values.

WEEK 3
After week 2's class, I did a little research on my own on youtube about digital matte painting. I watched the demonstration of how they do digital matte painting starting from photo bashing, then setting lighting to painting over and setting the ambience into a one whole cinematic picture.

YouTube channels that i watched include :
1. Yoyok Ferdianto
2. 7studio777
3. ArtStation
4. Photo Manipulation
And other more..

After watching them, i tried it on my own. First i picked out the movie theme that i wanted, so then i picked out Jurassic world.

Fig. 4 Paint over and ambience tryout

So here's what i came up with the first attempt of matte painting mainly because i just wanted to prevent doing it in the last last minute, so i figure maybe i could watch the demonstration and follow up step by step (with my own stock image).

After having this, I showed to mr kannan during class, and he says this could be used as the 'base'. But  anyways here's his feedback :
1. Train rail doesn't make sense at all, perspective wise.
2. Dinosaur skull is too hideous considering from this pov (imagine if its that big from this pov, how enormous would it be if we were in front of it) :")
3. The paint over for the green hill then suddenly a cliff nearby the train rail doesnt make sense..

WEEK 4
On this week, I tried another version of photo bashing and also doing the composition exercises.

Fig. 5 Photo bashing tryout

Fig. 6 Paint over and ambience tryout

Again I showed this to mr kannan and here's his feedback :
1. The way the cliff and grass is just not making sense..
2. Composition wise, doesnt make sense if the dinosaur in the tree trunk is that big considering from this pov.
3. Also, why is there a tree thats supposedly be like a 'bridge' connecting from left cliff to the right cliff? what is it supposed to be? ans: idk too honestly now that i think of it
4. He also mentioned (i think) its fine for the base, but maybe fix the wrongs first then later we can see what else we can improve.

On this week, we also did composition exercise, the one i did was S composition, Cave composition and diagonal composition. This composition is to help us understand more when drawing environment later on.

WEEK 5
Today's lecture was about sky replacement. we also did our exercises. Basically the sky replacement is photo bashing but also we need to adjust the ambience so that it makes sense with the surrounding environment to match the sky.

WEEK 6
This week i tried doing ambience exercise for the composition that i did 2 weeks ago.

WEEK 7
Virtual plan air is covered in this weeks lecture. I was legit thrilled when i found out what virtual plan air/plan eir however u spell it idk was about. Because i started doing art by painting manually in canvas, this made me so happy cuz i just love painting based on a reference. So anyways i did try my best in this span of time and i realize how different it is doing it digitally and manually..  but overall i did enjoy this process.

Project 1 : Invisible Set Extension (Pre-Production)

So as what i did on the first week's in this semester. I mentioned before in the exercise part, i watched tutorials and basics in digital matte painting and try it out. These are what i came up with.

YouTube channels that i watched include :
1. Yoyok Ferdianto
2. 7studio777
3. ArtStation
4. Photo Manipulation
And other more..

#1 attempt :
After watching them, i tried it on my own. First i picked out the movie theme that i wanted, so then i picked out Jurassic world.

Fig. 16 Paint over and ambience

3. The paint over for the green hill then suddenly a cliff nearby the train rail doesnt make sense..

#2 attempt :
On this week, I tried another version of photo bashing and also doing the composition exercises.

Fig. 17 Photo bashing

Fig. 18 Paint over and ambience

#3 attempt :
Third attempt of project one, i tried yet again but this time with a different concept, still its main theme will be jurassic world, but i wanted it to be abandoned typa thing with overgrown vines and nature. So first i started by doing research for HD stock images then compiling it together to one artboard by photobashing it, then Paint over and adding ambience.

Fig. 19 Photo Bashing

Fig. 20 Paint over and ambience

On class we showed our progress and here's what my feedbacks are:
1. What is supposed to be behind this gate? like it should make sense.
2. The background is too close somehow(?)
3. He also mentioned like adding transportation/boat nearby the lake so that it makes sense, its all about the storytelling.

#4 attempt :
I thought the third attempt was good alrd since i remember being proud of it, but then after feedback i realize it has a lot going on and it could be so much better, so then on the fourth attempt, i jumped into another setting which is when you (tourists) walked inside the jurassic world where they could shop, meet up, cafe's, etc.

Fig. 21 photo bashing and little paint over.

So here i chose a perfect image of a building, then photo bashed it with flipped broken vehicle, with train tunnel in the center, and if you look back you could see from afar the mountain scenery that is supposed to be if you walk forward. The idea here is that this is an overgrown little town that used to be a vacay destination, now is just taken over by the nature.

FINAL OUTCOME

Project 2 : Invisible Set Extension

So for the project 2, I firmed it and decided to go with the 4th attempt during invisible set extension. I did a paint over to make it better cinematically and also adding details and ambience surrounding it. During this process, i did multiple versions.

Fig. 22 First attempt of ambience

So this is the first attempt that i did, i want it to be spooky and that it gives of abandoned city typa thing. Was really proud of it at first.... but then after exporting and see it the next day, i couldnt see anything, it was too dark. so then i changed here and there.

Fig. 23 Second attempt

I promise i changed something here but somehow, it got darker?? anyways lets skip to the almost final result before i asked feedback from mr.kannan.

Fig. 24 Third attempt

At this point, i kinda give up and waited for sir's feedback regarding my problem, here's his feedback:
1. Overall in photo bashing wise, its good enuf.
2. Could add more highlight and lighting by adding red or blue and blend it with soft light or others.

So after that i finally try again and this is what i came up with.

Fig. 25 FINAL OUTCOMEE

twas looking good.... i mean it's muchmuchmuch better than previously. now you can see the buildings clearly, the ambience is good, the vines and overgrown grass is visible now, with the rusty details in the buildings and all...

FINAL OUTCOME

Final Project

Instructions :
Thematic and Realistic. Students will demonstrate technical capability to analyze, composite and communicate set uniqueness by blending 3D geometry and 2D painting to a raw video footage together with special effects. Students need to come up with 3 different location based on the theme and genre selected. Students must also showcase the breakdowns of how this project is undertaken.

Continuing from project 2, i move on to make the thematic matte painting editing in after effect.

Fig. 27 Invisible set extension

In the editing process, i added sfx that suits the environment, and also adding smoke that comes out from the car.

FEEDBACK

To sum up this semester's digital matte painting, i thoroughly enjoyed every single part of it, although it was quite confusing in the earlier stage, but then once i get it, it was fun. I notice how i was lacking ideation during the process? because initially i'm supposed to do some sketches before jumping into the actual photo bashing and all, but I just find it faster if i go do it first then see what happens next. I'll definitely practice more in the sketching part before jumping into the next step. But aside everything else, this was a fun experience and i might consider learning this further more.
