Project 1 : Invisible Set Extension (Pre-Production)

So as what i did on the first week's in this semester. I mentioned before in the exercise part, i watched tutorials and basics in digital matte painting and try it out. These are what i came up with.

YouTube channels that i watched include :
1. Yoyok Ferdianto
2. 7studio777
3. ArtStation
4. Photo Manipulation
And other more..

#1 attempt :
After watching them, i tried it on my own. First i picked out the movie theme that i wanted, so then i picked out Jurassic world.

So here's what i came up with the first attempt of matte painting mainly because i just wanted to prevent doing it in the last last minute, so i figure maybe i could watch the demonstration and follow up step by step (with my own stock image).

After having this, I showed to mr kannan during class, and he says this could be used as the 'base'. But  anyways here's his feedback :
1. Train rail doesn't make sense at all, perspective wise.
2. Dinosaur skull is too hideous considering from this pov (imagine if its that big from this pov, how enormous would it be if we were in front of it) :")
3. The paint over for the green hill then suddenly a cliff nearby the train rail doesnt make sense..

#2 attempt :
On this week, I tried another version of photo bashing and also doing the composition exercises.

Again I showed this to mr kannan and here's his feedback :
1. The way the cliff and grass is just not making sense..
2. Composition wise, doesnt make sense if the dinosaur in the tree trunk is that big considering from this pov.
3. Also, why is there a tree thats supposedly be like a 'bridge' connecting from left cliff to the right cliff? what is it supposed to be? ans: idk too honestly now that i think of it
4. He also mentioned (i think) its fine for the base, but maybe fix the wrongs first then later we can see what else we can improve.

#3 attempt :
Third attempt of project one, i tried yet again but this time with a different concept, still its main theme will be jurassic world, but i wanted it to be abandoned typa thing with overgrown vines and nature. So first i started by doing research for HD stock images then compiling it together to one artboard by photobashing it, then Paint over and adding ambience.

On class we showed our progress and here's what my feedbacks are:
1. What is supposed to be behind this gate? like it should make sense.
2. The background is too close somehow(?)
3. He also mentioned like adding transportation/boat nearby the lake so that it makes sense, its all about the storytelling.

#4 attempt :
I thought the third attempt was good alrd since i remember being proud of it, but then after feedback i realize it has a lot going on and it could be so much better, so then on the fourth attempt, i jumped into another setting which is when you (tourists) walked inside the jurassic world where they could shop, meet up, cafe's, etc.

Fig. 7 photo bashing and little paint over.

So here i chose a perfect image of a building, then photo bashed it with flipped broken vehicle, with train tunnel in the center, and if you look back you could see from afar the mountain scenery that is supposed to be if you walk forward. The idea here is that this is an overgrown little town that used to be a vacay destination, now is just taken over by the nature.

FINAL OUTCOME

Project 2 : Invisible Set Extension

So for the project 2, I firmed it and decided to go with the 4th attempt during invisible set extension. I did a paint over to make it better cinematically and also adding details and ambience surrounding it. During this process, i did multiple versions.

Fig. 8 First attempt of ambience

So this is the first attempt that i did, i want it to be spooky and that it gives of abandoned city typa thing. Was really proud of it at first.... but then after exporting and see it the next day, i couldnt see anything, it was too dark. so then i changed here and there.

Fig. 9 Second attempt

I promise i changed something here but somehow, it got darker?? anyways lets skip to the almost final result before i asked feedback from mr.kannan.

Fig. 10 Third attempt

At this point, i kinda give up and waited for sir's feedback regarding my problem, here's his feedback:
1. Overall in photo bashing wise, its good enuf.
2. Could add more highlight and lighting by adding red or blue and blend it with soft light or others.

So after that i finally try again and this is what i came up with.

Fig. 11 FINAL OUTCOMEE

twas looking good.... i mean it's muchmuchmuch better than previously. now you can see the buildings clearly, the ambience is good, the vines and overgrown grass is visible now, with the rusty details in the buildings and all...

FINAL OUTCOME

FEEDBACK

Ya so for this past projects, i definitely got humbled by how painting over is not easy at all, and i've grown so much respect for digital matte painting artists out there. I loved the process tho i must admit at some point i've lost it, i couldnt differentiate if this is the right color or if that's the better composition and blablabla. But ya after doing it slowly and most importantly trusting the process, I managed to finish one final artwork that i'm proud of. Also i'm thankful for all the feedbacks mr.kannan has given to me in my past projects, it might sound unpleasant sometimes i admit, but then i learn a thing or two, like composition la girl.. :)
